Current regulations require periodic inspections of fire protection equipment, which is an essential element of ensuring safety in facilities. Unfortunately, merely fulfilling this obligation often turns out to be insufficient. An additional problem is the literal interpretation of the definition of fire protection equipment, due to which many facility owners overlook the need for inspections and maintenance of fire doors without automatic control. This is paradoxical because these doors, unlike models kept permanently in the open position and closed only in the event of a fire, are significantly more exposed to wear and damage.
Although the introduction of the requirement for periodic fire safety inspections of building structures (in a scope significantly broader than fire protection equipment) in Poland is still in the concept phase, it is worth taking care of regular audits in your facility right now. Systematic inspections are an investment in safety, risk minimization, and long-term savings. During the use of building structures, events often occur that may reduce the level of fire safety compared to what was designed and provided during its construction. This applies to changes that occur in the facility, both structural changes and those resulting from the way the building or other building structure is used.
What are the benefits of conducting such inspections?
✅ Ensuring proper evacuation conditions – regular inspections help check the clear passage of evacuation routes, signage, and the accessibility of emergency exits.
✅ Identification of potential new risks and hazards – only an inspection by a competent person allows for verifying whether there are new factors in the facility that negatively affect fire and explosion safety.
✅ Analysis of changes in the facility – reconstruction, extension, or a change in the use of the facility (even seemingly minor) can affect the effectiveness of fire protection equipment – an inspection allows such changes to be revealed and appropriate action to be taken.
✅ Evaluation of fire safety procedures and documentation – regular inspections are an opportunity to update evacuation plans and fire response procedures, as well as other documentation related to the safety of the facility.
✅ Control of fire load – inspections allow for ensuring that stored materials and their storage method do not increase fire risk.
✅ Verification of storage organization – checking the compliance of ongoing warehouse processes with the requirements of sprinkler installations and smoke extraction systems, which can be crucial for the effectiveness of their operation.
✅ Verification of the effectiveness of fire separations – checking whether events affecting the effective separation of fire compartments or fire-separated spaces have occurred during the operation of the facility, such as damage to fire gates or doors, lack of protection for utility penetrations, etc.
Early detection of problems and their quick resolution allows for avoiding penalties, costly repairs, and – most importantly – threats to the life and health of people staying in the facility, as well as often massive losses resulting both from the destruction of the facility, equipment, and goods, and, what is sometimes even more significant, interruptions in the operation of the facility and the enterprise.
