Yesterday, an amendment to the regulation on social welfare homes came into force. From the perspective of individuals interested in the fire safety of such facilities, three significant changes have occurred. The first relates to the change in § 6 of the term "fire alarm system" to "fire detection and alarm system", which will put an end to any interpretations that sometimes arose that this referred to some unspecified strange devices rather than a fire detection and alarm installation. At the same time, the provisions of the regulation specify that the obligation to use a fire detection and alarm system in social welfare homes constitutes a fire protection regulation within the meaning of the Act on Fire Protection, so there is no longer any room for doubt as to whether its compliance must be verified by fire protection experts or authorized bodies. The provision also indicates that the required system does not have to be connected to fire monitoring.
A novelty in the regulation is also the indication that in social welfare homes for no more than 10 residents, instead of a fire detection and alarm system, the use of standalone smoke detectors arranged in accordance with the requirements for fire detection and alarm systems is permitted.
