A long, long time ago, when you bought a fire alarm detector, it was a device that operated in one specific way: a smoke detector was a smoke detector with a given sensitivity, a heat detector was a fixed-temperature heat detector with a given operating threshold or a rate-of-rise/fixed-temperature heat detector with given parameters. And as it turns out in today's practice, designers and installers had it "easier" back then.
Today we have new solutions, e.g.:
* smoke detectors in which we can choose what types of sensors are to operate and what the interdependence of their operation should look like;* smoke detectors in which we can adjust the detection sensitivity within a certain range;* heat detectors whose parameters depend on a software-set detector class;* multi-sensor detectors in which we can determine which sensors are to work and in what way, and what the interdependence of their operation should look like;* flame detectors whose sensitivity can be adjusted within the scope of setting various sensitivity classes;* etc., etc.
And what, was it supposed to be better? Greater possibilities? But it turned out as always!
You can look with a proverbial candle for designs where the designer takes the time to specify the intended settings of various elements of the fire alarm system, including the detection elements mentioned above. And designating the detector type on the drawings is not enough, because the same detector can mean very different detection mechanisms and parameters.
Occasionally, the situation is saved by an experienced installer who, instead of the designer—though of course this is not an optimal situation—makes the decision and sets specific device parameters. However, here there is already a high risk of whether they will do it in accordance with the design intent or quite the opposite.
The most common situation, however, is one where the installer does not bother with this aspect either, and the entire weight of the decision boils down to the factory settings set by the device manufacturer.
And it is worth mentioning here—perhaps it is not clear to everyone—that manufacturers of fire alarm systems do not design devices for a specific design project or set optimal settings for it that align with the designer's plans. Manufacturers have various talents, but fortune-telling abilities probably not yet 🙂
And one must realize that a failure to adjust the settings of a given device to a specific design situation will very often result in limited effectiveness of the solution, or in some cases a lack of effectiveness altogether, or the occurrence of an excessive number of false alarms.
And unfortunately, even though the above-mentioned possibilities of changing device operation through software settings are nothing new, in contacts with designers or installers who perform such installations on a mass scale, one can still hear surprised comments that the professional is hearing for the first time that something is configured for a detector. The problem escalates even further when such a design goes to a fire protection expert for review, who, placing too much trust in the designer's work and underestimating the weight of their own work, assumes that the selection of detectors and their parameters is not within their scope of interest.
Let us remember that even the latest technologies will only work as well as the people using them are able to utilize them. Unless, of course, we are waiting for artificial intelligence to do it for us?!?
