Not every smoke detector is a fire alarm system.

📣 Today's post is aimed at people who are not fire protection specialists. The topic is not new, but despite this, one can still encounter a misunderstanding of what various devices intended to detect fire hazards actually are 🔥❓

🔔 Fire Alarm System (FAS) - the heart is a control panel complying with the PN-EN 54-2 standard; detectors and/or manual call points and other devices, as a rule compliant with standards from the PN-EN 54-… family, are connected to the control panel‼️ This is a "real" fire alarm system‼️

🟠 Standalone fire detectors — these are detectors that operate independently and are not connected to a control panel. Sometimes they have the ability to communicate wired or wirelessly with other standalone detectors 🔋📡 These detectors should comply with the PN-EN 14604 standard, do not require an extensive installation, and you can install them yourself 🛠️ 🏠 Great, for example, for apartments, small hotels, or small offices, but they do not replace a fire alarm system where one is required.

‼️Recent changes in fire protection regulations have introduced a requirement to use them (in some cases deferred for a certain period) in accommodation and residential facilities.‼️

🦹‍♀️ Fire detector in an intrusion alarm system (IAS) - some intrusion alarm control panels allow connecting fire detectors to their monitoring zones. Sometimes they are used in fire alarm systems, in other cases they are standalone detectors equipped with output modules or other solutions. ⚠️ Note: Intrusion alarm systems are based on different standards than fire alarm systems – their purpose is protection against burglary, not fire detection. ‼️Even if we connect smoke or heat detectors compliant with PN-EN 54-… standards to an intrusion alarm system, it does not become a fire alarm system and does not exempt from the obligation to install a fire alarm system if required by regulations.‼️

🌡️ Detectors of phenomena accompanying the outbreak of a fire — especially in industrial installations, to detect the possibility of a fire early, various detectors are often used to detect, for example, a specific spectrum of gases accompanying thermal decomposition, detectors of surface and equipment temperature changes, thermal imaging, etc. 🌡️🖥️

All of this contributes to increasing safety, but it is not a fire alarm system and cannot be treated as a direct replacement for one.

❗ Why is this distinction important?

✅ Regulatory compliance – misclassification of a device can result in failure to meet legal requirements, problems during acceptance inspections and audits, and failure to ensure the proper level of safety.

✅ Reliability – systems designed to perform different functions are characterized by different levels of reliability regarding fire detection.

👷‍♂️ Each solution has its applications, but one must be able to distinguish between them and know in which cases each of them is appropriate and can be used 🔍🔥
